Least developed countries were defined in 1971 by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) as those with very low per capita incomes ($ 100 or less at 1968 prices), a share of manufacturing in GDP of under 10 per cent, and a literacy rate under 20 per cent. By 1990 there were over 40 such countries, with average per capita incomes of under 10 per cent of the world average. |
