These concern matters such as the procedures to be followed, the reasons for which employees can be dismissed, and the compensation to which they are entitled in the case of redundancy or wrongful dismissal. Strong regulation of dismissal clearly benefits those who already have a job. There is a danger, however, that strong employment protection measures may make it harder for the unemployed and new entrants to the labour force to find jobs, as employers will be reluctant to take on new employees if it is liable to be difficult or expensive to get rid of them should they prove to be unsatisfactory, or if market changes mean that they are no longer needed. |
