non-linear function A function which cannot be expressed in the linear form, y = ax + b. It may be non-linear in the sense of being continuously curved, with d2 y/dx2 ≠ 0. Alternatively, it may be non-linear in the sense that, while it consists of linear sections, these differ in slope: the function is piecewise linear, but has sharp kinks at the points where the linear segments join up. |
