单词 | utilitarianism |
释义 | utilitarianism The belief that rules and institutions should be judged by how good they are for people's welfare. ‘The greatest good of the greatest number’ was a slogan of its inventor, Jeremy Bentham. A utilitarian attempts to tackle the question of how far the state should control and how far respect private property by considering its usefulness and defects as a framework for economic activity, rather than asking how rules are related to either divine commandments or ‘natural rights’. |
