单词 | first-mover advantage |
释义 | first-mover advantage The benefit from being first in the market with a new product. This leads to a temporary monopoly, which may be profitable, and may last for some time if it can be protected by patents. It can be argued, however, that it is not necessarily a long-term benefit to move first. Later entrants may be able to use the first mover's invention without paying for the research costs, and can learn from the first mover's mistakes. It has been suggested, for example, that the UK suffered during the 20th century as a result of being first with the industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries. |
