hyperbola A function which can be expressed as the ratio of two linear functions. A rectangular hyperbola takes the form y = (α + βx)/(γ + δx). This function is continuous except at x = -γ/δ, which forms an asymptote, where y tends to plus infinity as x approaches it from one side and to minus infinity as x approaches it from the other side. The inverse function takes a similar form: x = -(α - γy)/(β - δy), so that x is continuous except at the asymptote y = β/δ. |
