| 释义 | Euro (€) The unit of the single European currency, adopted in 1999 as part of European Monetary Union (EMU) by 11 members of the European Union; Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. It has a fixed value in terms of each country's domestic currency; for example, approximately 1.6 Deutschmarks, or 200 Portuguese escudos. Initially the Euro was only a common unit of account, and not a medium of exchange; in 2002 it replaced the domestic currencies of the 11, plus Greece, which has now joined the Euro zone, and Euro notes and coin circulate in all 12 countries. In 2003 the UK has not yet decided whether or when it will join. |
