dual economy An economy in which modern industries, mines or plantation agriculture exist side-by-side with backward sectors, with little interaction between them. This situation may occur in less developed countries (LDCs) with foreign investment in extractive industries using expatriates for their more skilled work. If the rest of the economy consists of subsistence farming and traditional handicrafts, technology transfer from the advanced sector may be minimal. |
