This includes the ‘Visegrad countries’, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland; the Baltic countries, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania; and others including Slovenia, Slovakia, Romania, Turkey and Cyprus. Many of these had Europe agreements with the EU, by which they received trade concessions and undertook to bring their laws and institutions into forms compatible with full EU membership. Ten countries; Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta, and Cyprus joined the EU in 2004, and Bulgaria and Romania expect to join in 2006, but Turkey is still waiting. |
