单词 | weighted average |
释义 | weighted average An average giving weights to different numbers in proportion to their importance. The weighted average of N numbers x1, x2, …, xN is found by taking the sum of the numbers times their weights w1, w2, …, wN, divided by the sum of the weights, written μ = (∑i wi xi)/(∑i wi ). Whether a weighted or an unweighted average should be used, and what the weights should be, depends on the purpose of the calculation. For example, if per capita income is $ 10,000 in country A and $ 20,000 in country B, the unweighted average is $ 15,000. However, if country A has 1 million inhabitants and country B has 3 million, the average per capita income of the region including both countries is given by the weighted average, $ (10,000 * 1 + 20,000 * 3)/(1 + 3) = $ 17,500. |
