slavery The ownership of human beings by other people or organizations. While it has a long history, it is nowadays not generally practised, both on humanitarian grounds and because it is believed to be inefficient at providing incentives for work, and in particular for the acquisition of skills. It was widespread up to the nineteenth century, and labour practices in some countries even now are criticized as being akin to slavery. |
