managing director managing director(MD) The company director responsible for the day-to-day running of a company. Second in the hierarchy only to the chairman, if there is one, the managing director is the company’s chief executive officer, a title that is becoming increasingly popular in both the USA and the UK. In the USA the president is often the equivalent of the MD. If a company has more than one MD, they are known as joint managing directors. |
