An index of overall economic performance, taking account of both unemployment and inflation. An alternative name for this is a discomfort index. A simple form of misery index is the sum of the inflation and unemployment rates, but equal weights are not necessarily the best. The relative weights placed on unemployment and inflation should reflect beliefs about the relative importance of the harm done by these two evils.
