单词 | chlorofluorocarbons |
释义 | chlorofluorocarbons = (CFCs) Chemicals widely used in refrigeration, air conditioning, and heat pumps. CFCs were originally adopted because they are non-toxic and were believed to be safe. It has since been discovered that their effect in the stratosphere is to deplete the ozone layer, posing a worldwide threat to health through admitting increased solar radiation. An international agreement to reduce their use was reached in the Montreal Protocol in 1987, and it was agreed to phase out their use in developed countries by the year 2000. |
