If a system obeys a known difference or differential equation system on a deterministic basis, knowledge of the initial conditions is both necessary and sufficient to calculate its state at any later time. If a system is partly stochastic, its current state owes less and less to initial conditions as time goes on, and long-term prediction of its state is not possible. |
