单词 | equal pay |
释义 | equal pay The principle that the pay for any job should be independent of the sex, race, religion, or other personal characteristics of the person holding it. Equal pay for men and women is legally required in some countries, including the UK; it is, however, very difficult to enforce except in cases where employees have identical contracts of employment. It has been urged that to prevent evasion by minor variations in job description, the concept should be extended to ‘equal pay for work of equal value’, but it is enormously difficult to assess the ‘value’ of work. After many years of equal pay legislation and propaganda, the fact remains that in many countries including the UK women earn on average far less than men. |
