This occurs when total numbers fall so low that successful breeding becomes impossible, either because the survivors cannot locate one another, or because of a fall in the total genetic variety available to below a viable level. Many species have become endangered or extinct through human activities, through hunting them, changing their environment, or introducing exotic species which kill them or compete with them for resources. |
