释义 | histogram A diagram representing the distribution of a variable, where information is about discrete ranges of values. Areas in the diagram are proportional to the number of observations in each interval, for example personal incomes between £10,001 and £11,000 per annum. If the figures are in proportions, the total area must sum to 1; if they are percentages, the area sums to 100. If actual numbers are represented the total can be anything. When class intervals differ in width, as in the example below, the height of each column is chosen to make the area proportional to the number of observations in the interval shown. Where intervals are open-ended, for example ‘incomes above £1m’, some arbitrary assumption has to be made about the upper end of the top interval. The horizontal axis represents values of variable x; the vertical axis represents frequency. ABCD shows the proportion of the population with values of x between A and D. |
