| 释义 | spurious relationship An apparent relation between two variables, which disappears when the effects of a third variable are taken into account. Suppose that variable y is regressed on variable x: estimating the relation yi = α + βxi + εi gives an estimate of β which is significantly different from 0. However, if variable z is added, fitting yi = α + βxi + γzi + εi yields an estimate of γ which is significantly different from 0, but an estimate of β which is not. The apparent relation between y and x is thus shown to be spurious. |
