soil erosion Destruction of soil by wind or rain after vegetation cover is removed. Soil erosion is a particular problem in less developed countries (LDCs), where population pressure leads to deforestation and over-grazing. It also occurred in the American dustbowl. Water erosion can be controlled by contour terracing and the construction of small storage dams, and both forms of erosion can be prevented by planting ground-cover vegetation. |
