Purchasing power is thus the reciprocal of a suitable price index: if prices go up, the purchasing power of money goes down. Purchasing power is clearly dependent on consumer tastes: if relative prices change, for example meat prices rise and dairy prices fall so that the average consumer's purchasing power is unchanged, the purchasing power of vegetarians rises and that of meat-eaters with an allergy to dairy products falls. |
