Protection against loss of deposits by a customer, in case a bank or other financial institution fails. In the UK, depositors are protected by the Deposit Protection Fund up to a specified percentage of their deposits. In the USA, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation provides similar protection, through the Bank Insurance Fund.
