Founded in the formative years of capitalism to raise money for local projects, many have succumbed to the globalization of the markets. However, some, especially in the USA, Japan, and Germany, have survived. In the UK subsidiary exchanges exist in Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, Manchester, Glasgow, and Belfast; all of these were originally independent but are now branch offices of the London Stock Exchange. None still have trading floors (the last to close was Birmingham in 1989). |
