a group of countries in Europe that have developed common rules on many political and economic matters, for example on what taxes to charge on imported goods and on how companies may compete fairly with each other: The European Community was established by the Treaty of Rome in 1957, although it was then called the European Economic Community. NOTE The European Community is now part of the European Union. The term European Community is still sometimes used to refer to the European Union. |
