1 (BrE) (AmE checking account) (also cash account, AmE, BrE) (BrE also cheque account) a bank account that you use to receive payments and pay bills, for example by cheque or bank transfer: When you open a current account, you will be issued with a chequebook. The monthly interest will be paid directly into your current account. Some banks will pay interest on current accounts. Premiums will be debited monthly from your current account.
2 (Economics ) (also external account) a record of the money coming into and going out of a country as a result of imports and exports of goods and services, income from investments, etc: Declining car exports were responsible for the €2 billion current account deficit (= the amount by which money received from exports, etc. was less than money spent on imports, etc.).
