counterbid counterbid1. A bid made in an auction that exceeds a bid already made (which then becomes the underbid). countercyclical stock A stock whose value tends to move in the opposite direction to prevailing economic trends, i.e. one that rises in a recession and falls during periods of economic growth. Such stocks could include those in firms that sell low-priced essential goods or inexpensive ‘feel-good’ items (seelipstick effect). |
