civil law1. The law applied by the civil courts in the UK, as opposed to ecclesiastical, criminal, or military law. It is, thus, the law that regulates dealings between private citizens that are not subject to interference by the state. Its chief divisions include the law of contract, torts, and trusts. class action A legal action in which a person sues as a representative of a class of persons who share a common claim.
