Intel's 32-bit, 66 megahertz (MHz) bus for microcomputers (both PCs and Macs) introduced in 1993 as a replacement for the older VESA and ISA buses. It transfers data at 132 megabytes (MBs) per second and can handle up to 10 devices (3 of which can be add-on boards). Its improved 1998 version (PCI-X) is a 64 bit, 133 MHz bus that can transfer data at 1.06 gigabytes (GB) per second and is fast enough for fiber channel and other new very high speed network applications. Replaced in 2004 by PCI Express (PCIe) which transfers data at 250 megabytes per second (MBs) per lane, or total 8 GBs over 32 lanes.
