These include defence considerations, where governments prevent the export of advanced weapons and equipment used in making them to countries which they regard as unfriendly. Some countries restrict the export of raw materials to encourage the growth of domestic processing industries. Some countries have restricted the export of machinery to try to prevent the rise of foreign industries to compete with their own. Export controls are little used, partly because they have an immediate adverse effect on the balance of trade. |
