These are similar to economies of scale, but whereas with economies of scale cost savings arise from carrying on more of the same activity, with economies of scope cost savings arise from carrying on related activities. Specialized labour, equipment, and ideas used in one activity are often also useful in related activities. Given the prevalence of multi-product firms, a great deal of what is normally referred to as economies of scale is in fact economies of scope. |
