definite integral An integral evaluated between some upper and lower limits. If the first derivative of the function F(x) is f(x), then the indefinite integral of f(x) is F(x) + k; the definite integral of f(x) between a lower limit of a and an upper limit of b is written [int]a b f(x)dx = F(b) - F(a). If f(x) is plotted as a curve, the definite integral gives the area above the x axis and below the curve lying between x = a and x = b. |
