corset 1) A restriction of the movements of currency exchange values imposed by certain formal market mechanisms. 2) A restriction on the activity of the UK commercial banks, known as the Supplementary Special Deposits scheme, which was in force between 1973 and 1980. The scheme was designed to limit the growth of bank deposits, i.e. interest-bearing eligible liabilities, and thus indirectly control bank lending and the money supply, which depended on them. |
