City The district of London in which the head offices of many financial institutions are situated. Occupying the so-called square mile on the north side of the River Thames between Waterloo Bridge and Tower Bridge, the City has been an international merchanting centre since medieval times. Although many institutions remain in the Square Mile, others have migrated east along the river, to new offices in the Docklands area. |
