treasure trove Formerly, gold or silver found on land that had been hidden deliberately and that had no known owner. Treasure trove belonged to the Crown but the finder was recompensed for its value. Under the Treasure Act 1996 treasure was redefined as any item at least 300 years old and containing over 5% precious metal (excluding single coins). All such treasure belongs to the Crown, which will reward the finder. |
