pit = trading pit, pitch An area of a stock market, financial futures and options exchange, or commodity exchange in which a particular stock, financial future, or commodity is traded, especially one in which dealings take place by open outcry (see London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange, callover). A member who is allowed to trade on the floor but wishes to conceal his or her identity may use a pit broker to carry out transactions. Dealers in these markets are called pit traders. |
