1 (IT ) the period of time when a machine, especially a computer, is not working and cannot be used: A high percentage of system downtime is caused by software failure. The downtime resulted in lost production. Scheduled down time occurs between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. for maintenance of the network.
2 (Production ) a period of time when a factory is not working, for example because a machine needs to be repaired or there is not enough demand for goods: There is scheduled downtime from 5.00 p.m Friday until 8.00 a.m. Monday. They used the space at the bakery during the other company's downtime. We were badly affected by downtime on the production line caused by a power failure.
3 (especially AmE) the time when sb stops working and is able to relax: Everyone needs a little downtime.
