Discount, cashback, rebate and reduction can all be used to describe an amount by which a price is reduced. Compare their use in the following examples:
• We offer a 10% discount on cash purchases. • There's a €50 reduction for guests staying more than 7 nights. • (BrE) You'll get 1% cashback on all purchases with your credit card (= the credit-card company will pay 1% of the bill into your account) • (AmE) The computer sells for $900 after rebate(= after the discount is taken away)
A refund is not a reduction in price, but a return of the price or part of it: If not entirely satisfied, return the goods within 14 days for a full refund.
A rebate and refund can also be an amount that is paid back to you because you paid too much: a tax rebate/refund. A deduction is taken off the amount you owe before you pay it: You are allowed a tax deduction for money given to charity. |
