a list giving details of the goods that a ship, etc. is carrying. It shows that the company transporting the goods has received them and allows the buyer to collect them:

a paper-based/electronic bill of lading

The ship owner issued a clean bill of lading, acknowledging that the goods were received in good order.

a dirty/foul/unclean bill of lading (= one that states that the goods were damaged or some were missing when they were put on the ship)

The seller will normally send the buyer the bill of lading to allow him to collect the goods when they arrive.
