1 [+ obj] (usually be obliged) to make a person, company, etc. do sth, because it is the law or their duty: The distributor is not obliged to pay for the goods if they don't sell them. Current EU law only obliges companies to publish results every six months. Employers are legally obliged to provide a safe place and system of work for employees.
2 [+ obj or no obj] to help sb by doing what they ask or what they want: Business travellers demand the best treatment and we are happy to oblige. They demanded his resignation but he refused to oblige. |
