on approval(on appro) The practice of allowing potential buyers to take possession of goods in order to decide whether or not they wish to buy them. The potential buyer is a bailee (seebailment) and is obliged to return the goods in perfect condition after deciding not to purchase them. Many department stores and mail-order firms allow their customers to take goods on appro.
