legal tender legal tender Money that must be accepted in discharge of a debt. It may be limited legal tender, i.e. it must be accepted but only up to specified limits of payment; or unlimited legal tender, i.e. acceptable in settlement of debts of any amount. Bank of England notes and the £2 and £1 coins are unlimited legal tender in the UK. Other Royal Mint coins are limited legal tender; i.e. debts up to £10 can be paid in 50p and 20p coins; up to £5 by 10p and 5p coins; and up to 20p by bronze coins. |
