import-substituting industrialization (ISI)

A theory of economics which is utilized by developing market nations that are looking to increase their self-sufficiency and decrease their dependency on goods from developed countries. To implement the theory, there must be a focus on protecting the domestic infant industries so they can compete with imported goods thereby making their economy more self-sustaining.
