Practical or pragmatic (as opposed to idealistic or visionary) orientation that relies on 'hard facts,' and considers things as they are and not on what they might or should be. In politics, realism is called realpolitik. 2. Philosophical concept that non-concrete (abstract) entities such as numbers and mathematical objects have an existence independent of the human mind which conceives them. And that the knowledge classifications and other such taxonomic schemes are not arbitrary. Opposite of nominalism. |
