factory orders

Definition

A monthly report that includes data on durable goods orders, non-durable goods (products expected to last less than three years) and factory inventories. Of the three components in this report, a change in the demand for durable goods would be of the most interest to economists and investors. The importance of the report, however, is minimal because by the time the report on Factory Orders hits the street, the market has already had two weeks to absorb roughly the same data from the separate Durable Good Orders report. The factory orders report is released by the U.S. Census Bureau within the first few days of each month.
