Dewey decimal classification (DDC)

Definition
Knowledge classification scheme in which subjects are divided into ten main classes (numbered 000 to 999) and subdivisions within a particular subject are indicated by decimals. Used in the libraries for creating call numbers for books and other material (for their systematic cataloging and shelving), it was invented in the 19th century by the US librarian Melville Dewey (1851-1931).
