1. An individual or a group of individuals that is responsible for controlling and/or regulating an activity to ensure that participation is fair among all participants. Officials are also granted the power to penalize or punish participants that do not act fairly. For example, officials of the Department of Justice can prevent a merger of two companies if the officials feel that the merger would be in violation of antitrust laws. As another example, certain officials can also fine companies that are in violation of environmental laws.

2. Individuals or persons holding an office or title of authority. For example, supervisors are often officials who have the ability to act on behalf of the company, or give direction to subordinate employees.
