单词 density
释义

density

Definition
Weight (mass) per unit of volume used as a measure of the compactness of a substance. It is commonly expressed as kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m3) or pounds per cubic foot (lb/ft3), although kilograms per liter (kg/l) and pounds per gallon (lb/gallon) are also sometimes used. Density of water is one gram per cubic centimeter (g/cm3), steel 7.9 g/cm3, lead 11 g/cm3, gold 19 g/cm3, ice 0.92 g/cm3, gasoline 0.8 g/cm3, common wood 0.65 g/cm3, cork 0.24 g/cm3, and air (at sea level) 0.0013 g/cm3. Average density (D) is computed by the formula D = m ÷ V where 'm' is the mass of a substance and 'V' is its volume. Relative density (also called specific gravity) is the ratio of the density of a substance at 20°C or 68°F to the density of water at 4°C or 39.2°F. See also bulk density.

Use 'density' in a Sentence

The high density of the fishing float made it sink like a stone, while above it a red balloon floated on the water.
If you have ever wondered why wood floats and stone does not, it is because the wood has a lower density than water, but stone is much more dense than water.
Rocks have such a high density, they are heavy so when you throw them at people it will hurt them and people also make tools out of rocks.
