temporary restraining order (TRO)

Definition

Court order issued for a limited period as (1) an emergency remedy, (2) to prohibit a person from an action likely to cause irreparable harm, or (3) to maintain status quo. A TRO is issued only in exceptional circumstances and lasts only until the hearing for a preliminary or permanent injunction, or for determining appropriate relief, can be held. It differs from an injunction in that it may be granted immediately, without notifying the defendant in advance, and (3) without a hearing.
