cataloging in publication (CIP)

Cooperative arrangement under which US publishers supply advance information on forthcoming titles to the US Library Of Congress for assignment of a classification code (called LC Number) to the book. The LC Number is then printed on the verso of the title page by the publisher, and may change with the future editions of the book.
