Try-before-you-buy method of selling software in which a copyrighted (and fully functional) program is distributed free. The user is expected to pay only upon trying it for a certain number of days (typically for not more than 30) after which the program automatically becomes inoperable. On payment, the user is registered, and usually receives detailed-documentation, support by consultation, and rebate on updates. Partially functional software distributed in the same manner is called demoware which can be made fully functional on payment. Software that does not require any payment is called freeware. In all cases, however, the copyright remains with the writer or publisher of the software.
